Was slaving away at a script I’ve been working on that I’m trying to submit to get a literary agent. This interview came at the right time. Work hard and your dreams will manifest!

Seeing that comment made me so happy. Because that’s the sort of inspiration we get when we listen to, and communicate with, older generations. Sure, hearing that determination is a key ingredient in success probably doesn’t even seem particularly profound. But sometimes hearing that message from someone who actually put that theory into practice is what makes it sink in.

Your peers can post inspirational messages and quotes all day long, but those messages don’t hit as hard as the ones from folks who have actually proven these truths to be true. Hearing that Judy Blume got rejected by publishers for two years straight is like hearing that Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team. If these GOATs encountered adversity on their journeys, then we’re all going to encounter it. We’ve just got to push through.

And listen, not every message from an OG or GOAT is going to resonate with younger generations. A few Christmases ago, Judy sent me an autographed copy of Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, which was recently turned into an incredible movie. Of course I gave it to my daughter. It was time to welcome her into the world of Judy Blume.

But my daughter did not like it! I really wanted to get her blood tested after that. No way my daughter doesn’t love Judy Blume. “You’re not gonna tell me this book don’t hold up!” I told her. But she was adamant. For whatever reason, she couldn’t connect with it.

But I do everything in my power to make sure she stays engaged in cross-generational conversation. I don’t have a lot of folks over to my house, but the ones I do are people I really value and respect. And I make sure that whenever they are over, my kids interact with them. They don’t come over, say hi, and then run back to their rooms. No, they hang with us. They get involved in the conversations, even get into debates.

And I love it. Because I know that there’s so much more to be found in those conversations than they’ll find scrolling on their phones.

We’ve got to keep these conversations alive.

Let’s discuss….
